An end to disposable plastic items

What has been banned throughout the EU since July 3 is already common practice at the greenValue Office. With the ban on the production and marketing of disposable plastic items, facts are now being created in terms of sustainability to protect the oceans and the environment.

A voluntary contribution to reducing waste was already possible as a matter of course in our private and professional lives. At greenValue, we have been consistently avoiding single-use plastic products for a long time. “Drinks in reusable (glass) bottles, porcelain cups and reusable transport boxes are not really worth mentioning,” says Daniel Kellermann. Actually? “Given the amount of single-use waste that is still being generated, a legal regulation is overdue; relying on voluntary action is not enough,” adds the greenValue Managing Director.

To-go cups and fast food packaging made of polystyrene as well as disposable tableware, drinking straws, stirrers and cotton buds and balloon holders made of plastic have been banned since 3 July 2021. Existing leftovers may still be sold. Disposable products made of or containing plastic, such as wet wipes, certain hygiene products, cigarettes with plastic filters or disposable drinks cups, can continue to be produced if they are labeled accordingly.

As welcome as the legal regulation is, only a general rethink on waste prevention will bring resounding success. In our everyday private and business lives, we therefore follow the guiding principle: reduce, reuse, recycle. The focus is clearly on prevention and reuse, as this is the only way to actually reduce the amount of waste.
