Increasing number of electric cars with strong regional differences

The market development for electric cars is positive. However, new registrations are still too low for the transport transition to be a resounding success. Compared to the previous year, the number of registered electric cars increased by over 50% by the beginning of 2019. At first glance, an impressive increase. However, with 47 million registered cars in Germany, the proportion of electrically powered vehicles is relatively low at around 0.2%.

However, a regional comparison of market developments for electric cars reveals major differences. According to the Federal Renewable Energy Agency’s (AEE) state portal on electromobility, Hamburg is at the top with a share of just under 0.3%. When it comes to the absolute number of electric cars, Bavaria leads. Over 20,000 electric vehicles make up almost a quarter of the total number of electrically powered cars in Germany. Schleswig-Holstein is a pioneer when it comes to new registrations of electric cars. In the northernmost federal state, the proportion of electric cars is over 1.5% of total registrations.

Dr. Robert Brandt, the managing director of AEE, sees electromobility as a necessary factor in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector and achieve climate goals. However, market developments for electric cars are still moving too slowly in this direction. There are also currently some challenges, including the expansion and use of renewable energies. And as Brandt put it very aptly: “Every time we buy a car, we make a decision today about how we will live in ten years.”

Further information on the expansion of renewable energies and electromobility can be found on the website of the Renewable Energy Agency.
