New AEE animation shows necessities and technologies for a successful coupling of electricity, heat and mobility

Berlin, January 16, 2019. At yesterday’s top-level meeting in the Chancellery, a fundamental agreement was reached on financial aid for the coal phase-out. Now the focus must increasingly be on shaping the future energy supply. Sector coupling, i.e. the connection of the energy consumption areas of electricity, heat and mobility, which were previously organized separately from one another, will be a crucial component. The Agency for Renewable Energy (AEE) explains why this coupling is needed and how it can be implemented in its new animation “Creating synergies for the energy transition through sector coupling”.

The future energy supply must be based on renewable energies. The climate goals can only be met with renewable energy sources, and they are also cheaper than using fossil or nuclear energy sources. The gradual move away from fossil resources in this country has gained new momentum with yesterday’s meeting between representatives of the federal government and the prime ministers of the lignite-producing federal states in the Chancellery. In Germany, a sustainable energy system will be based primarily on wind and solar energy, although these generate fluctuating energy. For this reason, the entire supply system must be made more flexible and efficient than it is today. “An important building block for this is so-called sector coupling, i.e. the interaction between the areas of electricity, heat and mobility,” explains Dr. Robert Brandt, managing director of AEE since January 1st.

Sector coupling means that new flexible consumers such as heat pumps or electric cars draw electricity exactly when there is a lot of wind or sun available. This would create additional flexibility for the electricity sector and could displace fossil energy sources from the heating and mobility sectors. “In addition, using electricity for other consumption purposes is often even more efficient than using classic combustion technologies,” says Brandt.

New animation shows background and technologies for sector coupling
In order to illustrate the necessity and possible applications of sector coupling, the AEE has produced an animation on the topic of sector coupling as part of the “Forum Synergiewende” project funded by the National Climate Protection Initiative, which is now available online. “Only a flexible, holistic energy supply system is ecologically and economically sustainable. In order to achieve this, citizens must be informed about the upcoming developments and those involved in the energy industry, especially at the local level, must be encouraged to undertake corresponding projects. We want to contribute to this with our project and the animation,” Brandt continued.

The Forum Synergiewende project, carried out by AEE together with Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), brings together information on the coupling of the electricity, heat and mobility sectors and their potential for climate protection. The project is funded by the Federal Environment Ministry as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative. Information about the project can be found on the website www.forum-synergiewende.de
